students on the frontlines: mac hendrix

I met Mac at the beginning of his freshman year & have really enjoyed watching him grow as a godly man. He has been bold in leading a community group this year & is now seeing some awesome fruit in his relationships. Guys are coming to know the Lord because of his desire to serve. Last year he played back up guitar at our weekly meetings but has since become the leader of the whole band! Our loud, blow-out worship has become much simpler, more genuine &, to be honest.... I think everyone is loving it.  I'm proud to serve with Mac week end and week out... I'm also excited to share with you the email he sent me today about our Spring Break trip to New York. I asked him to tell you guys about his experience. This is what he said:

My name is Mac Hendrix; I'm a sophomore at Alabama. I had the opportunity to go with Bama Cru to New York over spring break. While we were there, we visited several college campuses and had the chance to be bold in our faith and evangelize with students on campus. While this was a great opportunity to share the gospel and further God's kingdom, I had a lot of personal growth while I was there.
Living in Tuscaloosa can dilute the urgency that I need to have as an evangelical Christian. It is easy to get wrapped up in the culture of the "Bible Belt" and be passive regarding sharing my faith with friends and other students on campus. The New York trip helped me realize how great the need of the Gospel still is in the world. The campus i visited was mainly Jewish, so the conversations were tough and at times it got frustrating, but that is when the true spiritual growth came. I was forced to completely trust and rely on God to do His will because at the time, my flesh was weak. I had to realize that I wasn't there fighting a battle for me, I was fighting a battle for Jesus- to plant seeds in the souls of men. Although I personally didn't see a lot of instant fruit come from conversations, I know the impact I had there will change eternity for someone and God will make himself known to these people.

Madaline is a junior at The University who hails from Mountain Brook, Alabama. She is a kind and considerate friend who is eager for her sorority sisters to walk with the Lord. I can honestly say I've never heard a negative thing said about Madaline. From March 10-17 she was in Costa Rica serving missionary families. The team did construction on the missionaries' home so that they no longer had to live in public quarters! This is SUCH an important job because it refreshes & encourages the missionaries. Now they can share the Gospel during the day and come home to peace and quiet at night! During this week, Madaline was also able to encounter the Lord...she explains...

"I left for Spring Break with the fact that I was no longer dating someone I dated for a long time weighing heavily on me. As I traveled to Costa Rica with Sozo Children International, I felt like I was in pieces. All I could do was hold onto the promises God had made me. God told me that he heals wounds, that he loves the brokenhearted, that he puts pieces back together, that he will never leave me, and that I will grow from all of this. I clung to all of these things.

When I got into the mountains of Costa Rica, God relentlessly pursued me, just like he promised. I heard his voice over and over again. I might sum up what he showed me in two ways. First, as I was reading one afternoon, I came to a quote of C. S. Lewis. Lewis said,

"A glimpse is not a vision. But to a man on a mountain road by night, a glimpse of the next three feet of road may matter more than a vision of the horizon."

God told me that we will take things one step at a time. As a driver in the dark, if I could only see the horizon, I would crash my car. God told me he will show me things in his perfect timing. I also can't forget reading Isaiah 42 again and again. Verse 16 says,

"I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them."

The truth is that I'm still sad and I miss my friend, but God's peace is with me. I'm excited and looking to a future I know almost nothing about. The details are a mystery, but I do know it will be a life lived for the glory of God. I absolutely trust him. He will light my path in order to take each step. There will always be darkness further up ahead, but that doesn't bother me because my God is always with me. He will never leave me, and nothing will take me from his hands."

students on the frontlines: blake stafford

She sat in the same spot every week. The worn evergreen recliner flush left of the fireplace. She'd come. She'd sit. She'd listen. Eyes wide. That's what I remember most about Blake, her curious, hungry eyes lighting up my living room. It was my first semester out of college and living in Tuscaloosa. I was nervous and not totally sure what I was doing but I remember that Blake always put me at ease. She has one of the sweetest smiles of anyone I know. She'd drink lemonade & take notes, often the first to show up and the last to leave. Each week a slew of girls would flood into my house. I had trouble establishing a consistent group but Blake... she was there every. single. week.... perched in that green recliner.                  Her heart was changing. You could see it on her face. You could hear it in her multitude of questions. Weary from long nights at Gillettes & a house full of catty roommates, Blake was starving for Jesus.  All she had wanted was to be pretty, popular, accepted... but she didn't feel like any of it was working. She had no idea how incredibly beautiful she is, how loved she is by the Creator. She felt unworthy, lonely & lost. And so the Lord started stirring in her heart, melting her one Bible Study, one Scripture, one conversation at a time.  That was a little over a year and a half ago... Now Blake is in Uganda.                                                          When Blake gave her life to Christ, she gave her whole heart. Her whole life. She is the kindest person I know, determined for her Tri Delt sisters to find satisfaction in Jesus, & a faithful servant to our staff team. Although Blake and I have often laughed until we cried, she is more often quiet than she is loud. Nevertheless, she never hesitated to lead. From the moment she started following Jesus, she asked me when and how she could create another community group to bring new girls to Christ. She was a humble leader from the beginning.  As she awaited acceptance to nursing school, she interned with our team this Spring and now, led by the Lord, she joined up with Sozo Children and is serving at an orphanage in Uganda. Blake loves Jesus. MAN does she love Jesus. It's funny how the Father used me to help lead her to Jesus, but how he now uses her to bring me into closer intimacy with him.And she is... one blog post at a time... Blake is revealing to me the heart of Christ.            Just two weeks ago Blake landed in Africa. As everyone else was flying out for Spring Break, Blake moved to Uganda where she will be living for three months. She is growing and excited to share with others. Please visit Blake's blog. Please pray for her. Please pray for the kids she meets with every day as she serves with Sozo Children. I love her and I think you will too.

Clay came to know Christ just a few years ago in college through Bama Cru & has since been an active member of our ministry. In 2011 he went on a Summer Project with us to Jackson Hole (pictured). About this time last year, when we asked him to begin leading a community group, he told me that he had absolutely no idea what he was doing. Don't let him fool you. Not only is he a fantastic leader, but a great friend. I love to talk to Clay about bluegrass, camping, his new girlfriend Sara, and our hammocks (some of my favorite things). However, more than anything else, I LOVE to talk to Clay about Jesus. He is humble, has a wonderful heart, & he is one of a few guys in our ministry reaching out beyond the Greek sector to guys at Alabama. I'd like for you to hear, from his perspective, what God has been doing through him this semester.

"My community group from last semester was immensely blessed by the Lord and therefore had to split (multiply) this semester. It's filled with guys that are really beginning to tap in to what God has in store for their lives. It's so evident because, not only are they bringing their own friends to the group but they have passionately pursued ministry opportunities outside of community group and even Cru. Whether they're going to Passion 2012 or getting involved in local outreaches such as Alabama IJM [International Justice Mission], these guys are seeking every opportunity to be obedient to the Lord's call on their lives. I've been able to invest in several of them specifically through intentional discipleship. I have been incredibly blessed in my two years of walking with Jesus to have awesome, Godly men disciple me, and these guys from my community group have made it so easy for me to pursue them. I can't wait to see what the Lord has in store for the rest of this semester."

international justice mission quote

Post AFTER you've explained who Darby is

"Last night I attended a meeting for the University of Alabama's chapter of IJM (International Justice Mission) and joined with many of my peers to find ways that college students on the campus of Alabama can get involved with fighting against slavery. Let me just say nothing fires me up more than gathering in a room of 30 or so college kids and figuring out ways to end slavery (and we do have some AWESOME things planned!). These guys and girls truly believe that our generation can make a HUGE impact through our seemingly small actions. I looked around the room last night as we were all having a time of prayer and reflection and realized how small I've made God to be in my life. Here I was surrounded by people my own age who truly believe with their entire heart that we can change the world, not because they think their actions are great, but because they know they serve a Great God who is MORE than able to end injustice. I seriously can not WAIT to see what the Lord does through these men and women this year at Alabama!! Stay tuned because I already know it's going to be incredible..." - Michelle Dunajcik, sophomore

just open up the doors

Brian Lee & attended Trickum Middle &  Parkview High School together in Lilburn, Georgia. In tenth grade I moved across town & attended Peachtree Ridge for the remainder of high school. However, over a friends wedding this summer, Brian & I were able to reconnect. As it turns out, he and I are both in ministry now!

Brian, who calls himself the 6'5 missionary, works for FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) in Indianapolis and has an amazing heart for the LORD. I love getting his updates! Just the other day I received an email from him where he explained the excitement brewing in town with the impeding Superbowl! &, most exciting of all, their ministry has developed a powerful yet simple plan for introducing others to Christ.... opening their doors.

Saint Johns is a BEAUTIFUL church (as you'll see in the video) located right in the center of the Superbowl festivities. Brian said that just the other day a crowd walked in and asked him to show them around. During the tour, one of the men, overwhelmed by the LORDs presence in the building, stopped Brian, looked him in the eye and said "can you tell me how to get to Heaven?"

Truly God is working. Amidst all of the exciting things (like ya know.. the Superbowl) & all of the awful things that will be going on this upcoming weekend (namely the sex trafficking that has been dominating headlines), I beg that you be praying for Brian and his staff as they invite others in and... open their doors!

welcome anna mitchell norris!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today our entire ministry celebrates as our director, Jeff, & wife, Rachel meet their third daughter & fourth child, Anna Mitchell!!! (You would not BELIEVE the number of tweets about this child already!) Tomorrow the Karls & I get to go meet her &...lets be honest... we're already obsessed with her.... As we've said before, we feel like our Bama staff family just acquired a child of our own. Praise the LORD for a healthy delivery and a child who will grow up in a home which preaches the Gospel day after day. We love you, Anna Mitchell! I can't wait to meet you tomorrow!!!

national championship

Let it be known, I bleed red & black; a member of the Bulldog nation for once & always. But for today, in light of our students & the April tornado, a church that has welcomed me with open arms & a God that is doing mighty things in our city, because of that da'gum Honeybadger & a team full of outstanding boys who are using football as a platform to share the Gospel... I can't help but to celebrate with Alabama's football program on their 2012 BCS National Championship. This was more than a football game.

From here in Tuscaloosa to wherever you call home...

passion 2012

January 2-5. Rumor has it there was somewhere between 42 & 45 thousand of us. We were sardines bundled tightly in coats and gloves, meandering winter winds through Centennial Park toward the Dome. 2,000 volunteers and 200 of our own Bama students in Atlanta for Passion 2012. Half an hour until the first 7 pm session began. I'm not one for fog machines and laser beams in worship, a snotty self-righteous preference I developed a few years back, but I took a deep breath, asking for God to use this gathering. I was exhausted but praying this week would encourage our students, laser beams and all.

First came Scripture. Thirty minutes straight of Scripture. Scaling down the screens as waterfalls gently washing the grime from my soul. This, our introduction to Passion, set the tone for the rest of the week. Engulfed in Scripture. Propelled by God's Word. Driven by His Direction. Moved by His sentiments.... Passion was ALL about Scripture.

For three days we met 5 times a day, twice for community groups and three times for main sessions. We heard from Chris Tomlin, Louie Giglio, Beth Moore, Matt Redman, Christie Knockles, John Piper, Francis Chan & a slew of other Christian Celebs, not one of whom introduced themselves. The worship was loud and, as expected, the laser beams were bright, but somehow the worship was so beautifully simple. The same lines, same verses, over and over and over again until the words finally broke through our thick, busy skulls and began to melt our stony hearts. Everything about Passion was so genuine, so rooted in Scripture. At one morning session all we did was read straight through Ephesians. No glam or glitz... just the Word, just a reminder of the Supremacy of Christ & the unwavering value of submitting our lives fully to Him.  Messages were the Gospel, Gospel, Gospel... not just moralistic, topical speeches but exogenical preaching deeply rooted in a call to sacrificial living. And, as you may have heard on the news, the theme was freedom.

We, as Christians, experience freedom when we take the focus off of ourselves & allow our lives to be saturated wholly and soley in the Holy Spirit. When we seek to know Christ intimately, we cannot help but to lose ourselves and feel joyously out of control. In this we feel freedom. When the things of this world 'grow strangely dim,' we feel liberated to let go of the shallow things that entangle us. We can then delight in choosing sacrifice because it doesn't feel like sacrifice at all. In this... we are free. The perfect God we serves delights in freedom... demands freedom, both inside of us.. but also in the world in which we live.

Today there are 27 Million slaves in the world, that is more than any other time in history. And as Christians, we have no excuse to sit back and watch. As one speaker pointed out, feeling bad about something and acting on it are not the same thing. We must act.

By the end of the conference, participants raised over 3 million dollars to fund 6 different organizations around the globe. Our goal was one million... Each group works to rescue, restore & prevent human trafficking. Although international justice causes have always stirred an intense passion in me, I was most moved by the 100,000 dollars that was given to the Mayor of Atlanta. Atlanta is shockingly the largest & most active sex trafficking city in the nation and with this money, we funded the first human trafficking task force in the state.  Cops began training last week.

The final night of the conference, we stood right outside the windows of CNN, in the heart of downtown Atlanta, and illuminated a memorial sculpture that students built throughout the week. It was a single hand reaching up to God for help in a vigil for human trafficking. The world was watching and we, as the next generation, made a bold statement. It's just beginning.

Returning back to Tuscaloosa from the conference, I was exhausted but refreshed. My soul needed the Truths explained time and time again over Passion. And, what is more, I cannot express how excited I am to watch the effects of Passion as they ripple through... the world. It was not just an emotional experience. It was not just lights. God showed up. He is moving. With Passion 2012 as a tool, I guarantee you the world will never be the same.
